This post was actually inspired by a tweet I posted regarding my plan of action for 2017. This is my first full year as a copywriter and I have three broad aims. Here they are, in a bit more detail than 140 characters.
As a copywriting rookie, reading already takes up a lot of my time. I've found websites such as Copyblogger and the Professional Copywriters Network to be invaluable. Likewise, the excellent book, Write to Sell (Andy Maslen), has been my guiding light as I try to find my way in the industry.
Perhaps it's a sign of my inexperience, but I genuinely enjoy reading all things copy related. I've gained small gems of information from some sources and hugely important pieces of advice from others. Whether it's books, blog posts or the websites of other freelancers, I know there's still a huge amount for me to learn – and it's out there.
Develop My Portfolio
If you're reading this then you'll know that my site is up and running. Hopefully you will also take the opportunity to view my portfolio page(s). I'm reasonably pleased with what I have so far. It covers a variety of formats and writing styles, though I hope that, in time, some of the 'spec' pieces will be replaced by examples of paid work from well known companies.
Until that happens, I'll need to come up with some other ideas of my own or…
Obvious? Of course it is. I can have a stunning website and a portfolio to be proud of, but if I can't convert my potential into real life jobs then it all means very little.
Pre-Christmas, I was already busy, trying to make contacts and land myself some jobs to kickstart my copywriting career. I've been in touch with agencies, charities and businesses. Hopefully, my efforts will be rewarded over the next few months. At the moment, I just need to be patient.
